Kele Okereke- 'The Boxer'

Kele puts down the guitars and starts fiddling with keyboards and electronics, creating his debut solo effort ‘The Boxer’- that throws some impressive punches. As with many bands that take solo careers, success canbe hit or miss. However, I reckon something glorious is about to happen with Kele’s new direction, as he has defiantly stirred away from the Bloc Partysound. Mixing some dubstep with electro pop, showcasing his own creative talents- that you can totally immerse yourself in.
The opening track ‘Walk Tall’ has an injection of dubstep accompanied with a repetitive hand clapping beat that sets the euphoria of the album. It seems Kele has experimented with different vocal manipulations to create a mix of effects, as in ‘On the Lam’ where he sounds more feminine. Along with more knee wobbling dub beats with a kick of drum and bass- that glorifies his newlove of synth loops and falsetto affects.
The first single off the album ‘Tenderoni’ has an electro beat that isdefinite floor filler, with a similar sound to ‘Wiley’- But Kele’s not wearing any cheap Rolex with this electro-tinged dance jam.
A guitar does sneak in on ‘The other side’, but in a more passive sense incorporated with echoic vocals to create a rhythmical melody. Giving your ears a softer sound with ‘The New Rules,’ that opens with a weary dial tonevoice with the slight strumming of an acoustic, along with guest vocals from Jodie Scantlebury.
Showing he still has a bit of Bloc Partying in him ‘Unholy Thoughts’ gives arunning base line through out, along with a familiar guitar riff that give reticence to ‘Hunting for witches’, that draws him back to earlier influences.
Let’s just hope he hasn’t totally let go from Bloc Party-‘The Boxer’ will be realised on the 21st of June.
