So a new year brings new bands and a lot of hype. Here are a couple that I think will own most of 2010:
Delphic
Yet another fine band produced from the depths of Manchester’s underground, taking indie and electronic sounds and giving it a bit of soul. This trio of Manchurians don’t want to be compared or haled in the same light as great bands such as Oasis, they just want to make sweet music. Like the Klaxons and Shiny Toy Guns they experiment using guitars, synths and other electrical effects. Their sound is similar to the likes of New Order, giving you pulsating beats with the emotion of indie evoking lyrics. ‘Acolyte’ will be the bands first album, after forming back in 2007 they have finally broke through. I see them being around for a long time, good luck Delphic!
Marina and the Diamonds
A Welsh wannabe Welch or a new Kate Bush? Well Marina from the Diamonds certainly has the accolades to be either. As not to follow the now trend of synth-pop and to fall into Little Boots and La Roux’s little gang, Marina sticks with a more piano based pop sound. Her lyrics are rather simplistic and to the point, as such songs as ‘I Am Not A Robot’. The Family Jewels will be the bands debut album out in February, including the singles ‘Obsession’ and ‘Hollywood’. I think this lass and her diamonds will go far, watch this space 2010…. and watch your back Florence.
The Drums
Now I hear a lot of hype around this floppy haired New York quartet, and I have to say 2010 may just be The Drums year. They have a very 60’s Beach Boys pop sound with songs such as ‘Surfing’ to songs such as ‘I Felt So Stupid’ that spark similarities to The Cure. They set themselves apart from the new upcoming bands that are cropping up everywhere, with their catchy melodies of summer, surfing and romance. I have also heard the lead singer is rather character on stage like a young Ian Curtis type, should be an interesting NME tour this year!
