Mogwai // Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will

Mogwai have been slaving away throughout the summer to produce this quite spotless seventh album, which sees some exciting rejuvenated new sounds from the Glaswegian five piece.

This ten track album is hardcore, and personally I reckon one of their best yet. Keeping post-rock alive, it’s a courageous step for the band who has owned this genre since the mid- 90’s. They make the rules and we’re so glad to have them back.

Carrying no words in their songs, Mogwai has a way of engulfing you in pure energy and intensity. A sound they seem to have mastered throughout the years, from the raw sounds of ‘Rano Pano’ to the eight minute long, smooth sophisticated tones of ‘Letters to the Metro’- they show why they are kings of post-rock. With ‘The Hawk is Howling’ in 2008, they display their witty odd titles, and with this latest record they don’t hold back with tracks such as ‘You’re Lionel Richie’ and ‘George Square Thatcher Death Party’. Songs such as ‘How to be a Werewolf’ like the video, takes you on a journey of pure mellowed out rock that’s just effortlessly enticing. This album could soundtrack any film, with their guitar based orchestra pieces that contrast between dynamic and harmonious tones. Each track is an instrumental masterpiece; like ‘San Pedro’ that is a thing of guitar beauty put together as well as an IKEA flat pack furniture pack – it just fits and flows with ease. Chillout or rock out with this, if you like Sigur Ros and want something heavier without Jonsi Birgisson’s falsetto monotone voice then listen to Mogwai.

Realised on the 14th of February, buy it for someone you love on Valentines Day, if they’re hardcore enough…
