V Festival 2009: EPIC

Grab your wellies and your anti bacterial hand gel because it's festival season yet again!!

This year I decided to check out V festival in Staffordshire, with a line up of Oasis, Killers and Fatboy Slim I couldn't say no really! Oasis were quoted to have said that V Festival was there favourite, which I don’t know if it’s true because they pulled out of Chelmsford due to ‘illness’, good thing I was at Weston.

To be honest I’m not the biggest Killers fan; don’t get me wrong they are amazing especially their first album ‘Hot Fuzz’. However, I think now with there 2nd and 3rd album they have gone into long ballard songs rather than indie rock n’ roll which is rather boring I must say.

Fatboy Slim brought their unique blend of vaudeville and visual effects to V this year and it was amazing. Norman Cook’s presence alone was awesome; the mix of music and lights just blew me away. Opening with ‘Praise you’ all the people who were watching the opening of the Killers on the main stage missed out big time.

We quickly ran over to the main stage to see the Killers, had to really just to say I’ve seen them. They were true to form, playing out on ‘Jenny was friend of mine’ to be honest I would have preferred Oasis on the Sunday.

I saw a bit of Razorlight as I was in a mile long queue for the loos, they were pretty good. Not the biggest fan of them, but i think they are a good band to have at a festival everyone knows their songs and what not.
Ocean colour scene were a surprise, they were amazing live especially the riverboat song, power chords! Also Starsailor who are also underestimated they have good classic songs you forget about.

Lady GaGa was one I wanted to see however being 10 minutes late waiting in a crowded arena kind off put me. Plus her set was very dramatic with films that didn’t make sense and a costume change every 2 minutes.

Dizzie was awesome! Pumped up the crowd for about 40 minutes none stop dancing, with his beach balls. Others on the 4 music stage like Katie Perry was surprisingly good, with her cover of the Queen’s classic ‘Don’t stop me now’. However, the Ting Tings were a bit rubbish, they have good music but it can’t fill a festival when there’s only two of them.

I love The Wombats I saw them on the 4 music stage, although they have been touring their first album for a while now. Still danced like a lunatic though.

Elbow was absolutely amazing live, their album ‘Seldom Kid’ is a mercury award winning album and so it should be. ‘One day like this’ and ‘Ground for divorce’ sounded amazing with their orchestrate.

Pendulum had to be the best performance alongside Fatboy Slim, this was there last gig before heading back to the studio or take a break one of the two. I have never jumped up and down so much in my life! They did an amazing Calvin Harris cover of ‘Not Alone’ was even better than the original.

Oasis I always knew they were going to be good, I saw them not so long ago in Manchester and they blew me away. However, Liam seemed a bit grumpy and even called the crowd ‘difficult’ but hey ho that Liam. I heard Noel wants to do a solo album and I totally think he should, I believe he IS Oasis and Liam is just the gob of the band. Favourite song had to be ‘Wonderwall'.
The weather was said to be cloudy with sunny intervals- however I think my sunburn would suggest otherwise! The sun stayed out all through out the festival which is always good when you’re staying in a Tesco value tent worth five quid. The loos left something to be desired but hey it’s a festival! Being as its Virgin there was a lot of other stuff going on. Like movies in the Arena, rides and random people going round asking for hugs.

Defiantly consider it next year again; you can’t beat a good festival.

  1. Lady Gaga was more like 15 minute late drama queen whose performance was amateur dramatics rather than music related. Not in the slightest bit original, big or cleaver and for that reason I'm out!

There was a distinct atmosphere between Noel and Liam which, I feel, affected their performance substantially. I understand that families argue but come on guys get a grip. By far not their best performance and nowhere near their achievements back in the day. But hey, at least we weren't at Chelmsford.

Ocean Colour Scene were phenomenal as always, perfect performance in the perfect weather and a great opening to Saturdays line up (after Bjorn Again, obviously).

Biffy Clyro sounded great from the campsite, as did McFly surprisingly!

No mention of Lily Allen, Lightening Seeds, Athlete, Calvin Harris or The Streets? Shame on you!

Lily, obviously distracted by the cricket, had a distinct lack of clothing on due to her new slim lined look and big wig effect. Lily is a staple ingredient in that she always performs well, a natural entertainer.

You really do know more Lightening Seeds songs than you think. They were alright to pass the time.

Athlete had a good crowd with people particularly enjoying performances from their first album So Much For The City.

The two acts which stood out by far for me were Calvin Harris and The Streets. Calvin Harris had the most incredible atmosphere. Who needs any chemical substance when you can have the most natural high from that kind of performance? Even the security guys were dancing.

I hold a special place in my heart for Mike Skinner. I first saw The Streets in 2004 at Leeds Festival after a mate gave me a copy of their first album A Grand Don't Come For Free. After listening to it once I instantly fell in love. You can not possibly miss their unique selling point.
Without going into it, there was an incident while we were out in Skegness and my mate included a lyric from one of their songs into his witness statement which was read out in court. Subsequently there is one less menace on the streets of England.
So as emotionally attached to The Streets as I am, I'm big enough to admit that I had a tear in my eye when Dry Your Eyes was aired, thank festival fashion for big sunglasses.

Overall the weekend was awesome, the line-up was too good to be true and there is no way they can top it next year.

  2. It wasn't meant to sound better, it was meant to compliment yours. Looking at things from another perspective and all that jazz. x
